Forward-deployed engineering · Founder-led

Forward-deployed engineer. An engineer inside your operation for four weeks, sorting what is broken from what is merely loud.

Jason Colapietro, the engineer who founded Suede AI, works inside your operation on a fixed clock: triage first, then the fixes that matter, landed in your systems rather than in a slide. The lanes that earn it carry on as managed AI agents.

What the term means

An engineer who works where the problem is

Forward-deployed engineer is a title that grew up inside enterprise software and then inside the AI industry: an engineer who works at the customer's operation rather than at the vendor's office, close enough to the workflow to change it. Putting an AI system into production turned out to be fieldwork rather than licensing, and the title spread with that lesson.

Suede AI offers the role as a service a business can buy, with a scope attached. It is also the front door to Suede's AI operations practice: triage first, then the lanes that earn it become managed agents.

The two jobs

Triage, then redirection

  • Triage

Sorting what is actually broken, what is a symptom of something upstream, what is loud on a Monday and irrelevant by Thursday, and what is expensive in a way the team has stopped noticing. It runs on the real material: calls, queues, reports, tools, handoffs and the last quarter of numbers.

    A ranked list with owners

  • Redirection

Moving effort off work that pays little and onto work that pays more, written down with an owner and a date. Some redirection is a process change, some a tooling change, and some becomes an agent lane once its shape is clear.

    Changes made, not recommended

How the engagement runs

Inside the operation, on a clock

  1. Week one · Look

    Build the map

Time with the people doing the work, the systems they use and the numbers the business runs on. Little changes in week one; the map gets built.

  2. Week two · Triage

    Rank what is broken

A written list of what is broken, ranked by cost rather than by volume of complaint, each item with an owner and a rough size.

  3. Weeks three and four · Redirect

    Work the top items

Processes rewritten, tooling repaired, reporting rebuilt, wasteful lanes closed. Fixes land in your systems.

  4. Handover · Or keep going

    Hand over, or automate

The map, the ranked list and the changes made go to your team. Lanes worth automating carry on as managed agents.

The clock is the point. A forward-deployed engineer is bought to compress a decision, not to sit on a retainer indefinitely: the function of an embedded engineering hire, for the weeks it is worth having.

Who it suits

Operations that have outgrown their process

A sales floor that has drifted, a support queue nobody trusts, reporting rebuilt by hand each month, tools bought and half adopted, a press record that stopped being maintained. It suits a founder who suspects the problem sits upstream of any single department and wants an engineer to find it.

When the diagnosis is already agreed and the work is simply to build, go straight to managed agents and the first lane starts sooner. For leadership of a whole AI program, Jason also serves as a fractional Chief AI Officer.

Who does the work

Jason Colapietro does this work himself

Jason is an engineer with 54 pull requests merged across 46 open-source repositories he does not maintain, including Jest, Adobe React Spectrum, Backstage and the Polkadot SDK. He wrote The Claude Code Bible and Codex in Production, the operator's guides to running AI coding agents.

Before Suede, he built, ran, and sold call centers. Triage of a sales floor, a queue or a reporting rhythm is work he did for years before it carried this title.

The working record

Each repair gets an owner and a check

The engineering handoff records the bottleneck, the change made, its owner and the check used to accept it. For a reporting repair, that means comparing the completed report with its source records; for a queue change, following a sample item to the right person.

For a focused next step, AI integration connects the agreed systems and AI workflow automation implements the recurring process.

Questions buyers ask

Questions about forward-deployed engineer

What is a forward-deployed engineer?

An engineer who works inside a customer's operation rather than at the vendor's office, close enough to the live workflow to change it. Suede AI offers the role as a scoped four-week engagement led by founder Jason Colapietro.

Is this consulting?

It reads like consulting on day one and stops resembling it by week three. A consultant leaves a recommendation; this engagement leaves changed systems, a ranked list with owners, and the lanes that were closed on purpose.

Is the engineer on site?

Forward-deployed means deployed into your operation, which is a matter of access rather than geography: your calls, your queues, your tools, your numbers, and time with the people using them. On-site weeks are arranged where they earn the travel.

How does this connect to the agent work?

Triage comes first. Lanes that survive it, and carry a number worth tracking, become managed AI agents under Suede AI's operations practice. Lanes that do not stay with your people.

What does an engagement cost?

It is scoped in a reply, after a call about what is actually going on. Write to info@suedeai.ai, call +1 (561) 401-0518, or book 30 minutes.

Next step

Describe what is going on, in thirty minutes.

One call with Jason is enough to tell whether the operation needs four weeks of triage or a single agent lane, and you get a written scope for the one that pays.
